There are three formal leadership training courses available to youth in Saskatchewan. FLEX for Cub Scouts, FAST for Scouts and FOCUS for Venturer Scouts. They are highly effective at reaching the youth because they are run entirely by youth.

Fun Learning EXperiance (FLEX)

FLEX is a one day course designed for mature Cubs. It is broken into six 45 minute modules. Each module is made up of games that demonstrate various topics. Topics covered include Leadership Traits, Effective Communication, Teamwork, Conflict Resolution, Problem Solving and the role of a sixer/second/keeo.

Fun Active Scout Training (FAST)

FAST is a one day course designed for mature Scouts. It is broken into 6 modules plus a lunch challenge. Topics covered include Leadership Styles, Effective Communication, Teamwork, Conflict Resolution, Problem Solving, Knowing your Followers and youth roles available.

Future of Canada United in Scouting (FOCUS)

FOCUS is a weekend course open to youth age 14+. It was first developed by the National Youth Committee in 1997 and presented to a delegation of young people in the Scouting movement from all across Canada at a conference in ‘97. Those youth that participated in the event, were given all the necessary materials to bring it back to their local communities; they helped spread their knowledge throughout the country. That’s what makes FOCUS so special—it’s designed such that any member of our older sections can pick up the trainer’s manual, read it, and feel confident enough to present the material to their peers.

Becoming a Youth Trainer

These courses are run entirely by Scouts, Venturers and Rovers. There is no need to take prior training to become a trainer of FLEX, FAST or FOCUS. Instead each course manual contains detailed directions on how to run it. You will also be paired up with another youth so you will not be on your own. You can take a look at the above links to the training manuals to get a feel of the content.

The FLEX and FAST courses consist of six 45 minute modules. Each module has a 10 minute introduction, 30 minutes of playing a game and 5 minute review. Youth will rotate through the modules in patrols of about 8. Between you and your partner that is only 4 kids a piece. Not so scary now is it?
